Is your garage door ready for Winter?

Winter is often a time when problems with garage doors surface, with the change in weather exposing new problems or exacerbating older ones. Taking a bit of time to carry out some basic checks now can help to identify any potential problems and rectify them before they become too serious. We suggest doing the following:

Is it insulated?

If you use your garage for more than simply storing belongings in then it is worthwhile considering the amount of insulation it has. With garages commonly used as offices, workshops, home gyms and extra living space these days, a wide range of insulation is available. This not only means your garage will be warmer, but that it will cost less to heat it too as it will be more energy efficient.

Have mechanisms been checked?

With freezing temperatures, key parts of the garage door are likely to stiffen up, making it more difficult to open and close. It’s worth giving elements such as the springs and hinges a once-over to ensure they are in working order and to oil them so that they are less likely to seize up over winter.

Is the weather stripping complete?

Finally, it’s also worth checking that the weather stripping on your door is not damaged. If it is incomplete then water, as well as cold air, will be able to enter the garage. Replace any missing weather stripping to ensure that the elements are kept out and the warm air can be kept in.
