Why is your garage door not opening?

For many homeowners across the UK, the garage door is the most often used entryway in to their home, with it being opened and closed thousands of times a year. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be a surprise that we insist you look after it and make sure it is in the best condition possible – treat your garage door just like you’d treat any other part of your home.

The team here at ABi Garage Doors Ltd recommend that you get your garage door serviced at least once a year. This way, you can stay on top of any problems that could potentially injure you or lead to you spending money on a new garage door.

Even if you choose the best garage doors possible, such as one of the Hormann garage doors on offer here at ABi, you will more than likely experience problems. Some of these problems are easily noticeable, whilst others are more complex, but to make you aware of any potential problems, we have put together this guide, outlining reasons why your garage door may not be opening.

Photo-eye blocked

In 1992, a law was brought in that all garage doors had to be made with a particular safety feature which means that the door would reverse if an object crossed its path whilst in operation – this feature is known as the photo-eye sensors.

They are two sensors which are on either side of the garage door, around 6 inches off the floor – if these sensors are blocked by dust or debris then this would cause the door to reverse in operation.

A simple solution for this is just to simply wipe the sensors with a cloth or tissue, which should hopefully remove any dust from the pea-size sensor. If this doesn’t work, give one of the specialists at ABi Barnsley a call and one of the team will come out and take a look at it for you.

Broken springs

If this happens, you will know about it. The sound of a garage door torsion spring breaking is an extremely loud one, and something along the lines of… SNAP, BANG, BOOM – a bit like the sound of a gunshot or a firecracker, so not very pleasant.

For this, we insist you don’t try to fix this yourself (unless you’re a garage door repair specialist of course). If you’re just a regular person and you try to fix it, you will more than likely injure yourself in a serious way. Another note is – DO NOT try to open the door if you think you hear the torsion springs snap, as it could potentially fall off.

Again, if you think your springs have broken, call us and we will do whatever we can to help.

Door is off its track

If your garage isn’t on its track, it won’t be able to slide and therefore won’t open. Therefore, we recommend that you check that the track is free of any bumps, bends, gaps or obstacles that may force the door to not run along it. Also, watch and listen whilst the door is in transition – if there is any squeaks, moans or if it gets stuck or slows down at any point, then the tracks are misaligned.

Get in touch with the team here if this is the problem.

Other problems which could lead to your garage door not working:

  • Disrupted power source
  • The remote control is malfunctioning
  • Loose or snapped cables
  • Sensitivity needs adjusting
